Barcelona is Catalonia’s capital and at the same time, the capital of the Barcelonés Camarca (local political division). It is also the second most important city of Spain. It has a population of 1.5 million inhabitants. Together with it’s surrounding area, the figure increases to 4.3 million inhabitants.

Located on the Mediterranean coast and less than 180 kilometres from the Pyrenees mountains, it has natural borders established by the Collserola range to the North, the Besós river to the East and the Llobregat river to the West. The Mediterranean climate is maritime, mild with an average annual temperature of 16ºC and with rains that can be intense for brief periods of time. From March till November the weather is usually warm, it is hot in July and August.

Along with the rest of Catalonia, Barcelona’s official language is Catalan. The language of Spain, Spanish, also holds official status.

The currency in circulation is the Euro.

In Barcelona, meals are taken later than in other European cities. A light breakfast is eaten between 9 and 11 a.m. Lunch is served in restaurants between 1 and 3 p.m.; it is also typical to have a snack in the middle of the afternoon. Dinner is normally served from 9 p.m. until midnight. The main meals, lunch and dinner, are made up of two courses plus dessert.

The working day generally begins at 8 or 9 a.m. with a pause at around 2 p.m. Most business re-open in the afternoon from 4 to 8 p.m.

Currency

The currency is Euro.
There are many ATM machines and banks almost on every corner of the street where you can withdraw money from your own account.

Airport

The airport is located 12 km outside the city.
There are three terminals. Make sure you know what terminal your airline is departing from. Barcelona Airport is a modern well organized airport serviced by many regular and low cost airlines.

Airport transportation:

You can travel from the airport to Barcelona city by:

• Train: The train is located on the other side of the airport and departures every 30 minutes. It takes 25 minutes to get to Plaza Catalunya and a train ticket costs around €2,50.

• Bus: A special Aero-shuttle is located just outside the terminals. The Aerobus goes every 15 minutes from and to the airport. It takes about 30-40 minutes to get to Plaza Catalunya and costs around €3,70.

• Taxi: Taxis are as well just outside the terminals. A taxi to Plaza Catalunya is around 28€.

Metro

Inside Barcelona the best way to travel is by metro. The Barcelona underground is very well organized. It is easy to buy one-way tickets, 10 trip tickets or day passes.

There is a great variety of hotels in the city. You can choose between very classical 5*****star hotels and economical but comfortable 3***star hotels. A number of hotel offers conference and meeting facilities. Ask us for additional information.

The Beach

In summertime the beaches of Barcelona attract both locals and tourists. A pleasant atmosphere, good drinks and food and the nearby city create a great atmosphere. Not faraway is Sitges, a very pleasant beach resort.
